Fall color in Colorado is an annual treat to the local photographer, and a dream vacation destination for those in other parts of the country. This past September, finally, I was able to spend a fair amount of time on the road in the central and southwest mountains as the colors turned.
With my parents bouncing around in the truck and rental jeep, I wandered around the Crested Butte / Kebler Pass area for a few days, then headed down to the San Juans at Lake City and Ouray for the better part of a week. The return trip took us through Mesa Verde, McClure Pass, the Maroon Bells, and Independence Pass.
Though we were a little early in the Crested Butte area, we hit the color dead-on around Lake City and the Alpine Loop jeep roads.
The pink traces on the map below show where we went.
