My photography takes me to a lot of fantastic places around the country... and gives me the reason to stop to really see things.

The list below is an ongoing log of where I've been with my camera over the last year or so. The links for bigger trips on this page lead to short reports of my most recent trips, including snap-shots from the road, and maybe some additional images not posted in the galleries.

I will update this page as opportunities and road trips occur.

Location Notes

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Wildflowers April 28-29, 2006

Two nice days shooting the tail end of the wildflower season at lower altitudes in the Park. Got a number of nice "specimen" shots, as well as a couple decent composition shots.

North Carolina "Waterfall Run" and Blue Ridge Parkway April 16, 2006

Went looking for spring green, flowers, and maybe a combination at some NC waterfalls. Not real successful. Nothing really blooming in the places I hoped to see... and it was way too early at elevation along the BRP.

Charleston Area Spring Flowers March 25, 2006

Attended a photo workshop in the Charleston, SC, area for spring flowers, live oaks, and beach.

Congaree National Park March 4, 2006

Early Spring jaunt to see if there was anything useful... ummm... there wasn't.

Huntington Beach State Park January 28, 2006

A day-trip to the coast to check out a potential bird photography spot. Not real productive... birds around, but not cooperative.

Magnolia Plantation November 26, 2005

OK, OK... this was real touristy, but was a rather nifty place for intimate scenics of swamps and flowers. Had the Grand Grumpy Putz remembered to put his tripod in the truck, he might have come away with even better stuff. Managed a couple hand-hold-and-pray shots, despite that stupidity!

North Carolina's Outer Banks November 19 - 20, 2005

On the way back from Baltimore, I popped over to the Outer Banks to check out potential birding spots and see what there is to see. Managed a few bird pics at Pea Island, and tried to miss a pretty sunrise there, but managed a couple snaps despite morning lethargy.

North Carolina "Waterfall Run" and Great Smoky Mountains National Park November 12-13, 2005

Yet another color search... this time found a little at Whitewater Falls, then headed up to the Park. Not much color left on the NC side, but TN wasn't too bad, and the far western end along the "Tail of the Dragon" had areas of nice color remaining, despite high winds earlier in the week.

Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge October 30, 2005

Went to find migrating birds... found a couple butterflies on some late-season flowers, and a few turtles sunning on a log. Apparently I was too early for the migratory birds.

***sigh***

North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway: Asheville to Boone October 29, 2005

As I feared, the color was pretty pathetic. A few hundred miles and never pulled out the camera. Much sadness.

North Carolina "Waterfall Run" and Southern Blue Ridge Parkway October 16, 2005

Explored the western end of North Carolina. Went to see some waterfalls and to scout the fall color. Only took a couple snapshots of the falls, and noted really anemic fall color. Could be a bad year.

Congaree National Park October 15, 2005

Went to check out the swamp. Has potential. At least the mosquito meter was at "Low".

Rocky Mountain National Park September 29, 2005

Went looking for elk. Finally managed a few shots before the daylight faded.

Colorado Fall Color Tour September 19-26, 2005

Fall color tour for my parents: Crested Butte, Lake City, Black Canyon, Ouray, Alpine Loop, Mesa Verde, and the Maroon Bells.

Rocky Mountain National Park September 18, 2005

Day-trip to take the folks up to find some elk and whatever views we could find. Got a few snapshots.

Mount. Evans July 31, 2005

Last goat trip of the season. More fun shots of the resident goat herd.

San Juan Mountains Wildflowers July 22-23, 2005

An aborted trip to find wildflowers in the San Juans. Operator error (stupidity) and general annoyance with the universe.

Mount Evans July 4, 2005

Yet again goats. Does the damned wind ever stop blowing up here??!!

Mount Evans July 1, 2005

More goats. Always fun, but cold and windy.

Mount Evans June 26, 2005

An earlier morning trip to 14,000 feet - a Bighorn lamb!! Never have seen one so small before and up close. Lots of mountain goats as well, with a number of this year's kids. Good day despite the gale winds and a snow squall or two.

Mount Evans June 19, 2005

A morning trip to 14,000 feet - a few goats and a lot of tourists. Must go earlier next time.

Rocky Mountain National Park May 28, 2005

A day-trip over Trail Ridge Road to the Colorado River Basin. A couple hundred elk, including a newborn (couldn't get a shot), and 13 moose.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR May 21, 2005

Went looking for burrowing owls. None cooperated.

Capitol Reef National Park May 13-17, 2005

Spent several days in the boonies of Utah's relatively little-known gem of a park.

Georgetown, CO March 27, 2005

Got shots of some bighorn sheep off I-70.

Florida Swamps February 22-26, 2005

Three and a half days, and 1500 shots of birds in Florida's swamps. Wow... way cool!
